“Race is a choice.” Before you go on an ignore that statement, think about it for a minute. You can choose to act your “race” as seen by others, or you can choose not to. Not all black people like rap, not all Mexicans are lazy, and not all Italians are great lovers.
I didn’t really spend a whole lot of time thinking about race until I moved to Mississippi about 4 years ago where it is a really big deal. I realized I was kind of a racist in a lot of ways, although I want to correct that. Now-a-days it’s mostly because I find the attitudes of the people who share my “race” to be so appalling. I have definitely be been expected to “act my race” and have been very bothered by that. I always try to think about it like, okay were all like 99.9% the same when it comes to DNA, it’s just our proximity that makes us want to look for differences or even be able to perceive differences. To a giant bug we’d all pretty much look the same.
